Beverages - Egg Milk Shake

Bonus post this week since this is such a short and quick recipe.  In looking through the cook book, I was quickly drawn to the beverages section.  Though I was hoping to find some vintage cocktail recipes, it probably shouldn't be too surprising that there are none.  Since I am more of a beer and whiskey person, it is probably good there are no cocktail recipes.  Going out to buy a bottle of booze we may not finish is not something I need to do.

There was a "recipe" that I had made MANY times though when I would visit my grandparents in Perham, MN.  They belonged to St. Paul's Lutheran Church and though it is a Missouri Synod church, I think that aside from a few theological differences that the church community they were a part of wasn't all that different than that of Zion in Thief River Falls just over two hours away.  On my shelf, I have a battered old recipe box of my grandmothers.  There are plenty of recipes in there that look like they would fit right in with the recipes in our cookbook.  But for all the time I spent in their house, I don't think I ever saw my grandmother use a recipe.  I wouldn't say that she was gourmet or anything, but she was certainly competent. Whenever I would visit when I was young, there were freshly baked cookies, and often fresh bread, and she would always make at least one big meal.  "Creampeasmashedpotatoesandgravy" is what I would invariably say when she asked me what meal I wanted.  The gravy usually came from a nice juicy roast.  But it was mixing up the creamed sweet garden peas with my mashed potatoes and gravy that brought me the most joy at dinner.  Then there would be something like a very large slice of cherry ice cream pie (which is straight out of the 50s, and very delicious. for me after dinner.  I never went hungry at my grandparents house.
This is a test pie from before our Pie-Off last fall.  YUM.

But I had mentioned one of the recipes that I recognized.  It was for Cold Chocolate.
This is it.  This is the whole Beverages section.
My grandparents would always have a bottle of Hershey's chocolate syrup in their refrigerator.  And probably from the time I was old enough to stir things without making a mess, I was allowed to make myself some chocolate milk, or Cold Chocolate as it is listed here.  I remember trying to be sneaky and squeeze more and more chocolate into the bottom of the glass, because more is better, right?  There's no doubt in my mind that my grandmother saw, but never said anything.  With the ice cream pie, cookies, and other sweets around, she wasn't exactly concerned with my sugar intake.  Now that I've got a bottle of Hershey's chocolate syrup in my refrigerator, I may just have to make a few more of those and think of Perham.

Aaaaaanyway.  Cold Chocolate isn't what I made last night.  I made the Egg Milk Shake.  How could I not make that?

Preparation

Making the Egg Milk Shake couldn't be a whole lot easier.  Add ingredients, shake, drink.  Raw egg though.  Our fear-industrial-complex has drilled into our heads that raw eggs are evil and will probably kill us unless we wash everything with bleach that has been touched by raw eggs.

But I figure that if raw eggs are good enough for Rocky Balboa, they're good enough for me.  You know, 'cause we have so much in common.  Well, we're both groggy in the morning, at least.

So here we are with our ingredients, and our mixing.
Death, delicious, or something else all together?
No crushed ice in this house without lots of noise.
Looking at the ingredients was a mistake.

Shaken, not stirred.  007 would be all over this.

Tasting and Reaction

So?
Sarah had a taste too.  Here's what we thought:

Me - Well what do you think?
Sarah - It doesn’t really taste like anything.
Me - Yeah, there’s barely any chocolate flavor at all.  It called for 2-3 T. and I put in 3.
Sarah - I was expecting to taste egg, knowing what is in there, but it really doesn’t.  It’s not terrible.
Me - Thumbs up/thumbs down?
Sarah - I probably would not drink it again.
Me - It’s just not quite delicious enough.
Sarah - Well, if you’re going to make something with chocolate syrup, you might as well make something that doesn’t taste like barely flavored chocolate milk.
Me - It’s also got kind of a thicker mouth-feel.
Sarah - It’s kind of coating, not in a good way.

We wound up drinking about 3/4 of the shake, but I didn't feel too bad pouring the rest down the drain.  There is no name of the contributor of this recipe.  Maybe she added the recipe simply because the Ladies needed more recipes in this section, but didn't want to be associated with it.

Next time - Norwegian Dishes!
