Aaron and Sarah's 5th Annual Pie-Off

As I may have mentioned last year, having a pie party may be the best idea I've ever had.  I mean there is only goodness that comes from a party like this.  It has three of the most important things needed in a party:  pie, friends, and more pie.  This year, we had a total of 22 pies, more than any previous year, so if anybody walked away without a distended stomach, that was their own fault.  I got pictures of almost all of the pies and their makers.  I'll provide a little commentary where I remember things, but my goal was simply to have some of every pie at the party so there is plenty that I simply don't remember.  Now without further ado, the pictures I had time to take:

Tammi and her Rumrunner Pecan Pie and her apple pie pops
Tammi posted a link to the recipe to her pecan pie.  She has won prizes in the past, and always brings good stuff.  This pie had a delightfully rummy taste that didn't overpower.  It was thoroughly enjoyable.  She won the State Fair Wannabe prize for her apple pie pops.

Sarah's Goodbye Summer Pie
This was pretty good and was a frozen pie with candied basil leaves on top.  It was pretty good.

Bernie's Octo-pie and Karin's pecan cheesecake
Bernie's work with the dough was impressive.  I remember really enjoying Karin's cheesecake, 'cause I've got a weakness for cheesecake.

Lindsey's Sarah Palin pie.
The Sarah Palin jokes did not get old.

Molly's blapple pie.
Molly said that making the tiara was difficult.  It looked great.  James loved the sprinkles and could barely keep his hands off the pie before we started.  She also won for the Pretty Pretty Princess category.

Joel's raspberry meringue pie.
James was advocating for Joel and his berry pie.  He said that it looked like a crown.

Carrie and Joss with her mint whoopie pies
Winner winner, pie for dinner!

My mom's rhubarb custard supreme pie
I only realized after we had cleaned everything up that hers was the one pie that I'd not tried, so I failed in having some of everything.  I skipped it as I was going down the line because I'd had it many times before and I didn't want to run out of space before finishing everything else.  Oh well.

Sarah's Crack Pie
This was REALLY good.  I was a little sad that there were only a few bites left for breakfast the next day.

Brandi's blueberry octo-pie and apple, potato, bacon pie.
Yes, two octo-pies.

Cliff's blu-barb pie.

My boozy cherry pie.  I'm pointing to the north... you know, North Star state.
I was proud of this pie, even if I let the crust get too dark.  The cherries right out of the jar after being soaked in brandy for a couple months just tasted of booze, but after the brandy/cherry juice/sugar was cooked down, it balanced pretty well.  I'm also proud to say that I won the No Kids Allowed award.  Here is the recipe for the pie, and in the blog post are links to how to make the cherries and the recommended crust, which was also pretty good.

Deb's peach pie.
There were some leftovers for this, and since she had to leave early, she left the pie with us.  Breakfast pie!
Julie and Lila's cherry pie, with Sam and Celia

Jim, Melia, and (I don't remember his name, oops) and their These Colors Do Not Run pie(s)
Jim is always creative with his pies and is a repeat winner.  This was a show-stopper and a winner of the 'Merica, the Pie category.

Sarah and me in front of the mostly gathered pies.

As always, we had a great time, and there was discussion of strategy in approaching all the pie and jokes about over eating.

  1. It looks like you all had a great time. Joe and I are bummed that we missed it - but are okay with keeping our cold germs to ourselves. Perhaps we can have some pie some other time!

  3. It was fun, as always. It was funny because as we were voting I felt bad that I stopped eating because I could still physically consume more pie. Not long after though, I was glad I stopped. That was a lot of pie. Next year, we're definitely bringing back some kind of savory category. I'll keep you in the loop for the 6th annual party.
